: Weather in the Midwest
: blessingsindisguise April 14, 2012, 06:54:29 AM
Hey friends.  We are under a severe weather advisory.

I live in the Omaha metro area, and they are calling for a rough night of weather.

Prayers for safety would be much appreciated.

I'm praying blessings. My brother is near OK City and he's prepping for storms too.

You're getting the storm we had yesterday and we had waterspouts (tornados over water) and crazy winds from it. We don't see that kind of stuff often here in So Cal! It was a wild one and I can just imagine it once it hits the plains.  :confused2:

We just had a big one pass over the west coast. In a land where it's rare to get 1/4" of rain in a 3 day storm, we've gotten 1-1/2" twice in the last 3 days. That's pretty much a "make sure there's life jackets in the boat" warning for the rest of the country. Batten down the hatches!

I will be Praying.  DH is going through Oklahoma City today, and the same storm you are facing, Blessings, has it's origins there.  You  have the strongest cell, OK city to Joplin has the next strongest, according to the weatherman here.  Tornados and all expected.  I really don't like him driving a truck full of tortilla chips through there.  All I can think is seven layer dip.  :(

Pray for DH too, please.

Blessings, hope you (and everyone else out there) is safe.  No seven layer dip!

Praying for your DH also neitlingme....

It's really scary.  They just closed the AF base that is adjacent to the metro area.  That hardly ever happens.

Will check in later tonight after it's all over.

Heading to bed friends.  So far the worst of the weather has missed us.  Alas we have gotten a lot of rain and our basement is flooding.  We will be all right, more of a nuisance than anything.

Thanks for the prayers.

Happy to know you're safe.  Sorry to hear about your basement.  :(

Glad to know you're safe, Blessings.  Any word on Neitlingmes' husband?

anne,

neitlingme's husband was hunkered down 100 miles behind the storm, the last I heard, so safe.

A little town 30 miles south of us was 90% destroyed.

So close.

Nobody was hurt, but the little town is devestated.

Makes my wet basement rank as an inconvenience at best.

Yep, Blessings was right.  DH decided to stop before getting into the storms yesterday, and drive all night instead.  I haven't heard from him today, and worry a little (it's par for the course), but don't want to wake him if he's actually asleep.  I'll text.  He isn't supposed to leave where he is until somewhere around 8pm tonight.  (deliverytime is 10pm tonight).

SO...I'm still praying, as his little corner of the world still has to go through the storms and head where damage has been.  Ugh.

Thanks all!!

We made it through without any damage in WIchita, KS...The mobile home court that was leveled is less than 1-2 miles from my place. It was a very scary situation and I am thankful we had a friend call us to their place and their basement. I feel so blessed we made it through with no damages to our house. The only thing that happened was my SX4 got scratched up by branches (which who cares). Our power came back on around 11pm...

How is everyone is? ANy damage?

I'm glad, too, that you weathered the storm without any further damage.

So glad everyone here made it through the storms safely.  We were fortunate as they passed by just north of us.  We got some heavy wind and rain, but nothing significant.

Blessings, glad it missed you.

I was driving in the storm last night right as it hit (heavy rain/flash flooding 35 MPH on a 70MPH hwy!) - I'm glad to have made it through.

DH made it through ok, and is well on his way up to NY.  Thanks for the prayers!

He said it got really dicey though, rocking the truck like it was a kid's toy in a busy bathtub...  Good thing he wasn't carrying Martini Makings!  :)

I'm so glad to hear you guys are OK.  Today is the 1 year anniversary of our house getting hit.  Hope I don't see that kind of weather again.  And our weather was mild compared to what you guys had.  We are traveling to St Louis next week.  I hate to admit I'm a bit nervous about it.  Last summer was so bad, and it seems this year promises to be worse.  I love to travel, so for me to be nervous about driving is strange.

Karleen, I know Kathleen is talking about trying to get a few of us together for dinner while you guys are in St. Louis. Jeannie is coming and she was going to talk to her husband about it.  Kathleen asked True if she'd come down too.

Hubby's coming, too!  We haven't worked the details out yet, but will probably drive to St. Louis on the 27th, go to the BC event on the 28th, return home the 29th.  I'm hoping that the evening of the 28th might be a time to get together.

Prayers greatly appreciated my friend.

The midwest weather caught up with us and smacked us early this morning.  About 5 a.m. a storm consolidated just west of us, and the straight line winds were 80 mph.  The storm was fast, very localized, and caused a lot of damage.

Our neighborhood was hit very hard.  Fortunately no lives were lost.  One family had damage to their home and cars.

Our home was hit by a 50 foot long tree branch that was 14 inches in diameter.  Our home is three stories tall in the back and it hit the roof and scraped down the back of the house, crashing into the railing of the deck.  It was raining so hard that water was driven into the house around the patio door.  One of the crown branches was blown across the top of our house and landed in the road in front of our house.

Fortunately, the damage was minimal.  We have a small amount of damage to the siding, the deck is totalled, the fence blew over, and a branch hit our suburban.  In the scheme of things, all minor.  It could have been so much worse.

Better for me, this happened while my sweet hubby was in town.  Sweetpea made it to the basement before me, and I melted down when I couldn't find her.  Sweet hubby redirected me, and got me calmed down and to the basement.  When it was all over, he took care of the call to the insurance company, and after a few more hours of sleep, started in on the mess with the chain saw.  He will take care of the appointments with the insurance adjustor and tree service.

Just asking for prayers as we are both really busy with work.  There is never a good time for something like this, but right now is particularly busy. Please pray that I keep a good attitude about this and keep things in perspective.

Thanks all,

blessings

I saw the pictures blessings.  What a mess!  Sorry you are having to deal with all of this.  It's always something.   :coffee:

Thanks true.

It is always something.

This at least wasn't directed at me.  The tree didn't scream "f you" as it fell!

Nope it was just a tree.  Falling in a straightforward broken tree sort of way!

Your deck photos made me cringe.

Definitely glad you all are ok.

You'll keep your wits about you with this one, because it's an isolated incident, it won't do the same thing, morning after morning after morning...

I do have to tell you all, besides having a panic this morning when I couldn't find sweetpea and the noise was horrific, the rest of the day was ok.

Having survived 17 years of RADishes, and our particular nasty 6 years of RAD hell, things like trees falling on your house don't even really rate.

Once I knew sweetpea was ok, everything else just was something to accomplish on the to do list.

I am not particularly fond of this 'school of patience', but RAD has bumped off a lot of rough edges on me.
