Ds10 loves this story because he can identify with the really upset Alexander, and yet at the end of the story, Alexander and his Mom end up reconnecting.   He can see from this story that Alexander still has a good Mommy who loves him, and the can then draw parallels to this 'good' Mommy who reconnects with him.  Also, Ds10 realizes, as does Alexander, that "I'm going to move to Australia" isn't the solution, but can certainly take the tension out of the situation.  It's by Judith Viorst.
